Sometimes you get a song but not an opportunity to lip-sync to it. The song Kunnathewas already composed as I reached the set and when Hariharan sir played it, it gave me goose bumps. Even while at the pinnacle of success in Malayalam literary world, ONV sir associated with movies and gave us several hit songs.
Malayalam poem lyrics movie#
I consider myself very lucky to have worked in a movie like Pazhassi Raja, which brought together many veterans like ONV sir, Ilayaraja sir, and Hariharan sir. He gave me too some evergreen songs like Nettiyil Poovulla and Oro Poovilum To fulfil my dream of working with him, I tried to bring in MB Sreenivasan for, Manivathoorile Aayiram Sivarathrikal, with whom he has created hits. His haunting melodies immersed us in nostalgia, pain and pleasure. I have always admired him and while listening to his lyrics, I have always wondered how he pens them so beautifully, that too in his signature style. To work with a maestro, who mentored my guru, was an amazing experience for me. He is also the guru of my mentor Padmarajan. I am really lucky to have included his songs in my movie. ithuvare kaanatha karayilekko.iniyoru janmathin padavilekko.madhuramaai paadi vilikkunnu.aaro madhuramaai paadi vilikkunnu. Its tough to pick the best out of his songs, but I would like to remember the verses of the song, Sarabindu Malardeepa, for which he wrote. ONV sirs romantic numbers have always surprised me and hence, once I asked him, How do you to pen such beautiful lyrics? Does your heart swell with so much love? He smiled, and instead of an answer he asked me, Is there a life without love? He loved Malayalam language and considered it divine. As we pay homage to the poet, Kochi Times takes you through the memory lanes lit with his evergreen songs. His associations with Salil Choudhary and MB Sreenivasan were very popular and with music directors Ravi, Devarajan, Dakshinamoorthy, MK Arjunan, Johnson, MG Radhakrishnan, and Ouseppachan, he went on to create evergreen compositions for Malayalam cinema. He has written about 900 songs for 232 movies.

However, his lyrical voice was predominantly romantic and many remember him more for his film songs than poems. He also wrote Ujjaini, a narrative poem on the life of Kalidasa. In the 1980s, he wrote Bhoomikkoru Charamageetham (A Dirge for the Earth), which became a song that was hailed not only by the green movement activists but also by the general public. By 1970s, his writings moved to a different plane and they showcased his concerns for environmental issues.

While his leftist leanings prompted him to come up with several inspirational songs, he did not confine himself to it as he also penned poems that carried deep pathos and sadness. Also, coupled with folksy tunes they were instant hits. It evoked empathy for the oppressed in the minds of the listener. His tracks became part of Kerala society as they were in spoken Malayalam and the metaphors taken from the lives of common man. His song Ponnarival ambiliyil kanneriyunnole for the play Ningalenne Communistakki was set to music by his close friend G Devarajan and is still popular. While his songs helped popularise the KPAC plays in the 1950s, its interesting that they outlived the plays and are still being hummed by the Malayalis.
